“Raising the Veil”

Suzanne Scott Constantine, 2004-2021
mixed media on canvas, 36″ x 52″

This artwork has been through many iterations. It began in the early 2000s as a representation of the effects of the “male gaze” and the objectification of the female body. Later, it became about the prevalence of surveillance. In every reworking of the artwork, the female figure, vulnerable and exposed, remained the same. In this latest evolution of the artwork, three Golden Girl Goddesses are standing behind her, reassuring her that she will survive what may seem insurmountable now. The veil they are lifting is hand-spun yarn from the beloved sheep of an artist friend. In the figure’s hand is a quasi-religious symbol of reconciliation and hope, made from the same hand-woven yarn. The visible text on the upper edge of the painting is “Everything Will Be All Right. You Are Enough.”
