“Disposables Emerging”

Suzanne Scott Constantine, 2019
mixed media and collage on canvas, 18″ x 24″

This artwork combines multiple layers of acrylic paint and other media with found objects, including a non-slip rug mat and treated papers from issues of National Geographic Magazine. The piece represents the close connection between environmental issues and women’s issues. Disposable items such as plastic bags and bottles and other hazardous objects fill our waterways and oceans—harming sea life and wildlife as well as humans. The female figures emerging from the waters are claiming a hallelujah victory over the damage humans do to the environment and to each other. The art envisions the joy and triumph that we experience when humans achieve reconciliation with the environment as well as with each other.
